FAQ
What everyone asks.
And if your question isn't here, downloading it and trying it will probably answer it: it's free.
Free and Live
Is the free version really free?
Yes. It has the whole sound: both amp channels, both cabinets, all 28 pedals and your NAM captures and IRs. It never expires, there are no watermarks in the sound, and you can make money with what you record on it.
Live adds features for playing live, never sound quality, and that promise is written into the license.
What do I get if I pay for Live?
Live mode, where you save 25 sounds in five banks, each with its name, color and icon; gapless sound switching; control from your MIDI foot controller over USB or Bluetooth, to call up sounds and to tie any knob or pedal to a footswitch; the stage view and full-screen tuner; and a no-cab output on each side. It's what you need if you gig with a foot controller. If you only record at home, the free version already gives you the whole sound; Live is for when you take it on stage or on stream.
Can I try Live before I buy it?
Yes, in two ways. On the home page there's a simulator of the Live mode window: you recall sounds, edit them, stomp a pedalboard, switch to the stage view and open the tuner, just as with the licence. And you try the sound with the free version, on your own setup and with your guitar: it's exactly the same as Live.
How do I buy Live, and when does the key arrive?
Click Buy Live and pay on Lemon Squeezy's secure checkout; they sell and invoice on our behalf. Within minutes you get a separate email with your key, at the same address you paid with. In the program, open Live mode, click any slot, paste your email and your key and click Unlock.
If the key doesn't arrive, check spam and write to [email protected]: it comes from your email, so we can always send it again.
Can I save my sounds with the free version?
In your DAW, yes: every project saves its Valvex sound with it, like any plugin, and it sounds the same when you open it. And the program on its own remembers the last sound when you close it. What Live adds is saving sounds separately to call up whenever you want: 25 of them, in five banks, one click or one stomp away.
Will my MIDI foot controller work?
Valvex uses the messages almost any MIDI foot controller sends: Program Change to switch sounds and Control Change to turn pedals on and move knobs, over USB, or over Bluetooth once Windows has it paired. And if you buy Live and it doesn't work on your setup because of the program, we'll refund you within 14 days.
What if I buy Live and it doesn't work on my setup?
Before paying, you can try the free version as much as you like, on your own setup. If you still buy Live and it doesn't work because of the program, we'll refund you within 14 days.
Is it a one-time payment or a subscription?
One payment of $29 at launch ($49 afterwards). No subscription and no monthly fees.
Playing with Valvex
Does it work for bass?
Valvex is built for guitar first, but bass has a place too. The CLEAN channel has body, Grip tightens up the dynamics, Trench adds octaves below and the two EQs sculpt the low end. And if you have NAM captures of bass amps, they load like any other.
Can I use my own NAM captures and IRs?
Yes, with no limit. Amp .nam captures play in place of the amp head; pedal captures, inside the Imprint pedal. Your impulse responses (IRs) drag onto the cabinet and play in place of ours.
Can I tune down without changing strings?
Yes: the Bend pedal shifts your whole guitar down or up, chords included, by up to an octave. Half a step down, a whole step or more, without touching the tuning pegs.
Do I need a powerful computer?
No. Measured on an ordinary laptop with a 2019 Core i5, the factory rig uses about 9 % of a single core, and about 20 % with a NAM capture. What you do need is a CPU with AVX2, which almost any from the last ten years has.
How do I set an exact value on a knob?
Hover over it and you'll see its value. Click and type the number you want, on the 0 to 10 scale or with its unit (for example 80 hz or -3 db), and hit Enter.
Installing
Does it work on Mac?
Not yet. For now it's for Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit.
Can I use it without a DAW, as an app?
Yes. Valvex runs as a standalone app: open it, pick your audio interface (with its ASIO® driver, if it has one, for the lowest latency) and play, no DAW needed. It also runs as a VST3 plugin, inside your DAW or any program that loads VST3.
Windows warns me when I open the installer. Is that normal?
Yes. Windows warns like this about new programs it doesn't recognize yet, especially ones made by a single developer: it isn't saying there's a virus, it's saying it doesn't know the app. Click More info and then Run anyway (here's what it looks like). If your account is an administrator, Windows then asks to allow the changes: that's to put the plugin in the folder your DAW reads.
If instead it says Smart App Control blocked Valvex, that Windows mode doesn't let you open programs without a digital signature. Write to us at [email protected] and we'll help you.
What happens if I uninstall it?
The app and the plugin go, and your stuff stays: captures, IRs, Live sounds and your license. If you install it again, you don't have to enter your key again.
License and data
Does it send any data?
None. No telemetry, it never connects to the internet for anything and it doesn't ask for an account. Your license is checked on your own computer.
Can I use what I record in my songs?
Yes, with the free version too: record it, release it, sell it or play it live. No royalties, no permission needed.
Can I transfer my license to someone else?
Yes, if you sell your copy. Let us know, we'll reissue it in their name and you delete it from your computers. The program has an option to remove the license for exactly this.
All of this is covered in detail in the license terms.
Ready to try it?
Valvex runs as a standalone app, with ASIO® for low-latency playing, and as a VST3 plugin inside your DAW. ASIO is a registered trademark of Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH.
